365 Days on the Indian River Lagoon
Sebastian River: A Look at Florida's Past & Future

Check here monthly to read these excerpts from Enjoying 365 Days a Year on the Indian River Lagoon Coast by author Rodney Smith published by Sawfish Studios, Inc. Capt. Rodney Smith, who has spent a life guiding anglers from all walks of life and skill levels to memorable catches, has written and published this book full of secrets, and tips, for those seeking to enjoy the greatest gifts Florida’s IRL Coast has to offer!

Sebastian River: A Look at Florida's Past & Future

We jump into Captain Momo's Tahoe – Captain Momo is a nickname used by neighborhood kids for fishing guide Mike Peppe – and it only takes a couple minutes to reach Dale Wimbrow Park off Rosalie Road from his cozy Sebastian homestead.

On the CD player, Marley's "Stir It Up" switches over to Pete Harris' "Just Another Day in Paradise" a couple moments before we step onto the single concrete ramp leading to Mike's "Happy Place." Today Mike appears happy, looks healthy. He's sporting a Columbia shirt, neatly trimmed goatee and clean fishing shorts. As Mike backs up his skiff, he mentions how he misses his dear friend Pete Harris, the local musical icon who died earlier in the year. Then, over the low hum of his 90-horsepower Mercury engine, he starts on a subject perhaps even closer to his heart.

"They're going to kill this river with development. The impact all these people have on the water quality and water table is too much." His face and voice deliver his anguish. "When we lived in south Florida in the late '70s, Stuart was the woods. Then we moved here in 1997, and this was the woods. It's changing too fast."

Go Fishing

    May 1: May Day
    May 5: New Moon
    May 11: Mother’s Day
    May 20: Full Moon
    May 26: Memorial Day

Best Days To Fish in May: 1-2, 10-11, 15-29

Best Days to Stay Home in May: 3-9, 12-14, 30-31

Inshore:With May’s warmer temperatures and longer days, look for species like tarpon, snook, redfish and spotted seatrout to be feeding in shallow water earlier in the day. These fish will be roaming in areas holding schools of mullet, needlefish, silver bait or glass minnows.

Schools of mid-to-large jack crevalle will be holding near the surface along the beach out to 6 miles offshore. A jig or live bait works best. Buy yourself a bucket of pigfish to use for catching oversize spotted seatrout “gator trout.” They’ll also take topwater plugs in shallow water over grass and sandy potholes.

Offshore: The spring run of dolphin is going off in the waters west of the Gulf Stream. Keep a sharp eye out for schools of flying fish, rafts of sargassum and weedlines, color and temperature changes, and inspect every piece of flotsam.

Remember that when a school of smaller dolphin come to your boat, the bigger bull and cow dolphin will usually stay safe in the deeper water under the smaller fish, floating structure or weedlines.

Good numbers of wahoo and billfish will be migrating along the west edge of the Gulf Stream. King mackerel will be a good bet on the inshore bars and reefs. Don’t overlook tripletail and cobia that will be roaming areas of sargassum in the nearshore waters.

Farmers Almanac Weather

    May. 15-25: Scattered t-storms, seasonable
May. 26-31: Sunny, then t-storms, seasonable

Boating

The USCG estimates that in 80 percent of boating accidents, the boat operators had no boating education. John Kendrick, a Banana River Sail and Power Squadron volunteer says,“By attending shows, we’re trying to make people more aware of the boating courses and other educational opportunities available to them through the Power Squadron.” This group is dedicated to teaching both the public and its own members boating safety. Learn more at www.bananariversps.org.

Freshwater The freshwater bite on the Kissimmee chain has been plentiful. Look for bass on the beds, as they finish up on spawning, and move out to open water. The shellcracker bite is in full swing also on the beds and catches can aveage a pound or more. They get their nickname for the small row of grinding teeth used to crunch snails. Try a red wiggler worm. Wojos Bait & Tackle in St Cloud informed us that anglers are getting their limits of panfish everyday. ~Capt Randy DuMars

HUNTING The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has scheduled four public meetings throughout the state to receive public input on draft recommendations for enhancements to its quota hunt permit system. Draft recommendations for change include permit transferability, guest permits and expanding quota permit choices. The final of (4) meetings will be held May 13, 6-10 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World on International Drive in Orlando. Learn more at the myfwc.com.
